Almost all Czech restaurants in the city centre have a limited offer of what can be considered the traditional Czech cuisine. This always includes a goulash (may be in a bread loaf), roasted sirloin in a cream sauce (this unremarkable name actually hides one of the best dishes of our cuisine - my favourite), roasted duck with cabbage and a pork knuckle, all except the last one served with some kind of sliced dumplings. Although these meals ale definitely worth trying, especially if you happen to be here in the cold part of a year, they are but not the most common nor the best of what our home cooking has to offer. Keep in mind that a liberal amount of beer may be necessary to wash all these hearty meals down. Below you will find more information about our diet and some of my recommendations.
Bistro Cafe - Vypečená matka
Betlémská 261/12, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
Quiet location and humble entrance lead to a place where you can order some most iconic Czech treats: sweet dumplings and buns with custard, that are rarely seen on the basic tourist menus. They also have good soups and other small dishes, but the sweet stuff is what makes me come again and again.
Cafe Nona
Národní 1393/4, 11000 Praha 1 - Nové Město, Česko
This place primarily serves students of arts, actors and theatre visitors, but equally well will serve you given a chance. Open face sandwiches, cakes, soups together great selection of both hot and cold drinks including nice list of cocktails will take a while to walk through. The unique interior with an iconic early 1980-s design and colourful collection of guest will keep you entertained while waiting for your drink. My first choise for a coffee or a shot of Becherovka in the area.
Kavárna Mlýnská
Všehrdova 449/14, 11800 Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Česko
Self-declared art gallery with regular surges of creative forces and a bit unsettling design of a bar counter by David Černý. One of the best places for a glass of wine and absolutely the best in Prague to try a "little coffin biscuits with a whipped cream". Well, I have just revealed what draws me in.
Vinný bar Blatnička
Michalská 431/5, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
This humble place and its equally unremarkable neighbour Blatnice is the ultimate place do a research on Moravian wines. With the surprisingly friendly prices it mostly targets locals which makes i the perfect hideout wine bar nice sheltered form overwhelming crowds around. And have I mentioned that the wine is good too?
Týnská literární kavárna
Týnská 630/6, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
Hidden in a tiny street behind plain looking door is a pleasant refuge for all people tired of the hassle on the main thoroughfares. While enjoying a beer a cup of coffee or a toxic looking draft soda you will be able to scan art pieces hanging on the walls or turn pages of one of the many books found on shelves in what is known as "The literary cafe".
Cafe Montmartre
Řetězová 224/7, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
If there is a place that stays true to a tradition of attracting artists, students and other "bohemians" it is certainly this venerable institution featuring a piano, genuinely old photographs of old illustrious regulars and many dark corners. As artists are often thirsty but seldom the top earners you can expect decent prices and a good beer.
Cafe Neustadt
Karlovo náměstí 1/23, 12800 Praha 2 - Nové Město, Česko
If you happen to be at the place of the first Prague's defenestration there is no better place to contemplate than this cafe nicely hidden in the inner yard of the town hall (enter through the gate at Vodičkova street). Enjoy the great variety of coffee and the colourful crowd.
Garden Cafe Taussig
Vlašská 344/25, 11800 Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Česko
If you decide to take the longest and the prettiest way to the Castle you will certainly appreciate a nice rest in the middle of the climb. Hidden in a garden of a seemingly rundown building this nice cafe employs workers with light mental and physical disabilities giving them a chance to learn and progress.
Kafe a hrnky
Nerudova 244/25, 11800 Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Česko
In the midst of the most impressive but also the most commercialized street in Prague there is a surprisingly simple place with a story. When sipping a coffee "kafe" you may start considering to test your pottery skill making some mugs "hrnky" to be fired and collected on the following day.
Grand Classic Cafes
Each city has a selection of cafes and restaurants that have been appreciated for decades if not centuries by rich and famous and whose renown is enough to attract crowds today despite of usually higher prices as they are more than compensated with the ambience of a luxury, great service and a delicious menu offer. Everybody knows these places and everybody visits them when in need to impress a guest or a date. Expect white tablecloth, a waiter in a waistcoat with some witty small talk, generously sized menu cards and tiny expressos.
Slavia
Národní 1012/1, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
Facing the National Theatre this art deco place has been a favourite place for actors and theatregoers alike.
Grand Cafe Orient
Ovocný trh 569/19, 11000 Praha 1 - Staré Město, Česko
Cubist art can be looked at, sometimes can be touched but rarely eaten unless you go to this place and order a "věneček" a custard-filled choux pastry. Czech Cubism museum is just one floor up from your table.
Cafe Louvre
Národní 1987/22, 11000 Praha 1 - Nové Město, Česko
One of many classy restaurant-cafes in this area Louvre specializes on breakfasts and brunches.
Cafe Imperial
Na Poříčí 1072/15, 11000 Praha 1 - Nové Město, Česko
Surrounded by art nouveau you can enjoy wide range of fine meals and drinks. In spite of its name the place is rather a restaurant than a cafe.
Lobkowicz Palace Cafe
Jiřská 3/1, 11900 Praha 1 - Hradčany, Česko
After spending some time in a Prague Castle you will certainly appreciate an impressive view from the terrace and a refined atmosphere of the only privately owned palace on the Castle hill. Terrific Lobkowicz family art collection is just a few paces away.

Hostinec U Dvou slunců
Nerudova 233/47, 11800 Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Česko
Few would expect an honest place with welcoming Czech staff, unpretentious traditional food and some local clientele placed in the prominent spot on the Royal Road, the "tourist highway" of Prague. Well… be pleasantly surprised and know, that the tradition of this pub dates back to the 19th century, when the ancient house where it is to be found was a living place of one of the most popular Czech writers ever since - Jan Neruda.
U Zavěšenýho kafe
Loretánská 179/13, 11800 Praha 1 - Hradčany, Česko
Seated on the top of a ridge in the quiet neighborhood of the Castle Town this place offers one of the best views of the opposing Petřín hill and the iconic red roof of the Lesser Town. There is hardly a better place for an evening relax coupled with a dinner or a Moucha beer produced in a recently opened Prague brewery.

Don't do in Prague
Historic Tram Line No. 42 (hop-on hop-off)
What may seem to be a great option for comfortable and environment-friendly sightseeing is unfortunately just a wasted opportunity on the part of the Prague Transport Company. The main problem is a 40-minute interval that forces you to carefully plan ahead. The price of 350 CZK is ridiculous compared to the 120 CZK for a regular 24h public transport ticket. The former will give you access to all trams, buses and subways within city limits plus the option of using the Petrin Hill cable car. Several tram models that are still in use date back to the 1970s while the sentimental but regular line No 23 operates tram models dating back to the 1950s. You will not get those on the expensive line No 42 advertised as "historic".
If you are seriously attracted to the undeniable charm of old vehicles get on line No 41 which operates cars from the first half of the 20th century and works on single ride for 100 CZK model. Sadly the interval of this line is 80 minutes and the route bypasses most top historical sites.
Electric scooters
Before you decide to risk a shaky ride on Prague's cobblestones please note, that you are about to pass on the opportunity to fully enjoy this perfectly walkable city, and will get blisters from holding onto your bar and get many angry looks from passers. For the price you are going to pay for a short ride, you can easily get a 24-hour public transport ticket that will safely get you virtually anywhere you want. A number of scooters regularly found in the Vltava River clearly shows the scale of frustration of unfortunate misinformed users.
